Every family is a tree. Ours finally looks like one.
Family Tree is a living family archive and ten ways to read one story — from a classic chart to a tree you can walk around in three dimensions. This page shows an invented family: twenty-one people, four generations.

Charts
Chart, Generations, Living tree
The classic descendant chart with elbowed connectors; the same tree banded by generation with birth-year ranges; and a Living tree that grows from a trunk — tapered bark branches, knots at every fork, leaves in tufts and the ancestry of the selected person lit as an amber vein.
-
Person-centred
Hourglass, Fan chart, Pedigree, Family card
Put anyone in the middle. Ancestors rise, descendants fall; a five-ring fan sorts the father's and mother's sides; a pedigree runs four generations left to right; the Family card lays out parents, partner, children and siblings — with a dashed slot wherever a relative is still missing.

Lists
Outline and search
A collapsible outline with lifespan, place, generation and lens — for when a tree is the wrong shape. Scope and lens apply here too, so the list and the canvas always agree.

These are not screenshots: the window below runs the system's real canvas on an invented family. Drag to pan; click the canvas and scroll (or Ctrl + scroll) to zoom.

The descendant chart with elbowed connectors and lineage highlight. The same tree banded by generation, with birth-year ranges. Founders on the trunk, every generation a wider ring of branches and leaves. Ancestors rise, descendants fall from the person in the middle. Five rings of ancestors, father's side and mother's side. Parents, partner, children and siblings of one person.
Walk around the family
Five scenes are drawn in real time with three.js. Orbit, pan and zoom with the mouse, trackpad or touch; double-click takes you flying to a person.

a trunk, bark, a crown of leaves and blossom, cards that fade on the far side
-
Constellation
every person a star in a slowly turning galaxy; lines of descent in light
-
Globe
places of birth as pins on the Earth, migrations drawn as arcs
-
Helix of lifespans
every life a thread wound round the years, twenty years a coil
-
Photo wall
the archive's portraits as a carousel in depth
Made for reading, not just drawing
-
Scope
Whole tree, ancestors, descendants or ±2 generations around a person — the canvas re-fits itself to whatever is left.
-
Colour lens
Tint cards by completeness of data, surname, birthplace, sources or whether the person is living. The same lens colours the Lifespans screen.
-
Lifespans
Every life as a bar on one time axis, with a year slider that shows who was alive — and how old — in any given year.
-
Places
Birthplaces on a world map, migrations between generations drawn as arcs; there is a 3D globe too.
-
Editing
Add a father, mother, partner or child right on the canvas; edit and delete — any edit can be rolled back from the history. Viewers see the same tree without the controls.
-
GEDCOM
Export the tree to GEDCOM — a standard file that other genealogy programs open. Import from GEDCOM is there too.
